I honestly just recently found out about these atrocities, but growing up inundated media, I was never informed that we even had slaves. Sure, I had seen the movie Blood Diamond, but I never knew that this modern-day slavery extended to such common household products such as cotton shirts.
The series brings artists from different time periods into dialogue with one another, exploring how the past resonates with the present through contrasting mediums, forms and processes. By creating this contrast, viewers are urged to consider the unseen, overlooked and silenced histories that shadow each of their respective contexts.
Bringing together works made in Africa, Europe, and the United States from the nineteenth to twenty-first century, the exhibition demonstrates the international scope and reach of art from Africa and its diaspora.
